We provide attentive care to ensure your horse remains in top condition throughout their spelling period and beyond.
Young horses, in particular, thrive when given time to reflect on their training. After learning new techniques, such as adjusting their pace, responding to cues, or improving maneuverability, they need time to let those lessons sink in. Physically, they are still growing, much like a teenager whose muscles are developing to match their growing frame. Regular, short spells are crucial for allowing young horses to build strength and maintain their overall well-being.
Spelling also offers vital mental benefits. Training can be intense, with new experiences from track work, pool sessions, and even beach outings. A spell keeps your horse mentally fresh, so they return to training eager to work and perform at their best. At Heartland, we tailor the length of each spell based on your horse’s unique needs, typically lasting 6-8 weeks, though younger horses may benefit from shorter spells of 3-4 weeks.
